New Sony Xperia Tipo: Budget Smartphone for Under £100

Budget smartphone from Sony offers entry level camera, processor etc but with latest Android OS

Price: From around £7.50 per month on contract, £90 PAYG

Sony's Xperia range is joined by the Tipo later in August, which is an entry level smartphone, aimed at those who are probably still using a traditional mobile with limited internet browsing ability.

Fact is, more shopping, government services and local businesses are going online, so without a smartphone you could be missing out on things like special voucher codes or deals, or perhaps scanning barcodes to find the best price on something in the supermarket.

XPERIA TIPO FEATURES

Xperia Tipo 2With a 3.2 inch screen, 3.2MP camera, plus an 800MHz processor the Tipo has industry standard basic spec, plus it's a good looking smartphone - you expect that from Sony.

It also runs the latest Android software, called Ice Cream Sandwich, which means online browsing and using apps should be smooth and easy.

It comes pre-loaded with Facebook and Google by the way, so if you're a first-timer when it comes to smartphones, you'll soon get the hang of using your phone to keep in touch on the move. It also has the usual built-in radio, music/entertainment download store and you can take video clips as well as still shots with the camera.

The Xperia Tipo also has a micro SD slot, you can store up to 32GB of data on the card if you want. That's useful as the Tipo has 2.9GB of internal storage, which is not that huge if you like downloading lots of music and video.

On a contract with a data download limit? Read our Onavo data shrinking app review here - it's a real moneysaver.

IS THE TIPO WORTH A LOOK?

Best Feature:  Budget price tag, nice compact design makes it easy to carry.

Worst Feature:  Relatively small screen might prove a bit of a pain in the long run.

Area for Improvement: Can't really argue about the overall quality or features for the price, but shop around as there are plenty of mobiles under £100 which offer similar features.
